Ok.... so I have to ask you "experienced" moms out there a question. Let me precede the question with a little bit of background information. I am very "open" with information for my kids... if they ask a question, I want to be honest with my answer. For instance, "Mommy, what is this between my legs?" My answer, "That is called a penis." So... my 2 older boys know the name for their anatomy... it's not called a willy, or a winky, or a peanut, or any other name that some people choose to use... and that's OK... personal preference, right?
So, here's my question. Tonight, Xander (5 1/2) comes to me out of nowhere. He drops his drawers and holds his ...um...sack... he says, "What's this hard thing behind my penis?" WHAT THE HECK?? WHAT DO I TELL MY KID? I think to myself, whatever I tell him, he is likely to share with his classmates at school...so what do I say? I drew a blank. My mom sat here and all she could say was "I don't know" (concealing her laughter)... so all I came up with was, "Ask your daddy, he's a boy, he should know!"
I am such a wuss. What on earth am I gonna do with the more "serious" questions he'll ask me one day? I guess I could've just said, "It's part of your penis" but nothing came to me until after I passed it off on daddy (who, by the way, wasn't home to defend himself!!)!
SO... now that I've shared a potentially humiliating moment (for Xander when he reads this as a teenager) with all of you, can ANYONE out there offer a suggestion for explaining anatomy to your 5 year old???
ANYONE?
PLEASE??????

WOW! I have never been asked that, and I have 4 boys! I would go with that is part of your penis, cus it kind of is, and you could tell him the technical name for it, scrotum, since you like to do that.
ReplyDeleteAs a forensic interviewer (former) it is so refreshing for you to teach your kids the correct names for their anatomy. You would not believe the names I have heard for body parts. Kuddos to you for that!
ReplyDeleteAs for the question...at 5 1/2 you could probably still get away with "I don't know" or "I'm not sure, I'll have to find out." There is always the option of saying "Go ask your father." I'm sure he would really appreciate that!
We use real names too! I would tell him that it is called a scrotum. If he asks for more details then I would say that it is part of his penis. I would think that would suffice for now. By telling him you don't know he may think that something is wrong with him, like it's not suppose to be there or something....I don't know! I hope Dad got him filled in! :)
ReplyDeleteIt's okay....my friend has a 2 year old daughter and a 5 month old boy. She was changing the boys diaper and her daughter was freaking out because she thought his sack was poop and mommy wasn't cleaning him properly before putting on a new diaper!
