Water-Grow Toys

Have you seen these things? Or perhaps your kid has used a quarter in a little toy vending machine and "won" that little plastic ball with a water-grow turtle or lobster inside?

My bunch LOVES these annoying things. Quarters are ~~wasted~~ used for these entirely too often!! I'm not sure what the obsession is with them, but the kiddos enjoy putting them in the bathroom sink to "swim" for days on end. They get so excited every morning when they go into the bathroom to see how much it grew overnight! (Side note: we DO empty the water for hand-washing and tooth-brushing, then refill the sink)

So, recently while I was in the bathroom looking at the soggy turtle and spongy fish, I got to thinking.

What is the purpose of these things? What use are they? The kids don't play with them- they just get spongy and sit there in my sink day after day soaking up more and more water. If exposure to the water is taken away, they begin to dry up and shrivel. So what's the point??

Then I had an "AHA" moment!

These dumb little annoying toys showed me a real-life SPIRITUAL example!! I was shocked too!

"How can this equate to our spiritual life?" you ask...

My spirit is like that toy! The more I am exposed to the Word, the more full I get. Just being in the Word every now and then won't grow me- it'll only whet my appetite for more! The more exposure I get, the more I immerse myself into the Word, the "bigger" I will get, the "fuller" I will become. But if I take away the exposure to the Word, I get all dry and shriveled!!

So, while I STILL don't understand the point of those silly 25 cent vending machine toys, I am excited for the life application I found in them! I am looking forward to soaking up all of the "water" I can. I want to immerse myself in the Word every time I get into it! I don't want to just read the scripture, I want to absorb it- to take it all in every single time!! I don't want to be dry and shriveled- I want to be FULL of HIS Living Water!!

Thank you, dumb toys, for teaching me a great lesson!
